Holy cow! Where to begin on this one? Easily my most ambitious convention print to date, and honestly, probably the most marketable. I've been on a big Batman Beyond kick ever since the HUSH Beyond miniseries back in 20...10? 2010. Maybe. So it was only a matter of time before this happened.
The keyword in this piece is "perspective". The second keyword in this piece was "eyeballing". The first instance of this was figuring out how to foreshorten Batman into that flying pose, which I must have drawn and redrawn at least six times before getting it how I like it (and of course, one of my practice drawings came out perfect immediately. Ain't that always the way?) The buildings and the villain projections were also totally fudged, but I think it works.
The villains were all drawn on separate pages as head-on images, since I wanted them to appear as projections on a flat surface. I drew all of them as I would normally, then colored and comped them into the final piece. Speaking of, I'd like to think that the neon projections were a fairly elegant way of incorporating many of the iconic Batman Beyond villains into the piece. Represented are Blight, Shriek, the Jokerz (the gang from ROTJ being led by the usual head member voiced by Bruce Timm), Spellbinder, Mad Stan, Inque, and the Royal Flush Gang.
I knew that if I was going to do a Batman Beyond piece, I had to incorporate the elderly Bruce Wayne. To do a piece like this and not include him would be disingenuous to the franchise. Bruce appears with a God-head, looming over Terry. The imagery of Bruce essentially casting a shadow over Terry also led me to try adding a shadowy Bat Signal to Bruce's face on a complete whim, and I liked it so much I kept it in the final version.
The one thing I kind of regret is not finding a way to include Ace, but eh, can't win 'em all.
